Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, youth leader of the environmental organization Earth Guardians, is a 14 year-old artist and activist from Boulder, Colorado. Martinez’s name, pronounced “Shu-TEZ-caht,” was was given him when he was six weeks old, in the Black Hills of South Dakota by Aztec elders Arvol Looking Horse and Xolotl Martinez.

Although just a teen, Martinez has nearly a decade’s experience in environmental issues, has given TED talks about his work, and recently addressed the United Nations about the current global water crisis.

Our photographic correspondent Vanessa Black shot this video in collaboration with ANCHORLIGHT to tell Martinez’s story. To see how you can get involved, visit: generationryse.com
