Born and raised in Ukraine, Bozhena (Bo) Chapli is New York City-based artist and photographer currently enrolled in the Parsons School of Design in Fine Arts program. Her work is at once pretty, and pretty hysterical, and we love her outlaw sensibility. Chapli was kind enough to tell “Beautiful Savage” a bit about her working process.

Bo, thank you very much for taking the time to answer a few questions for us. As an artist, how would you describe yourself in three words?
Strange, impulsive and open minded. I’m not entirely sure if that is accurate, but that’s what I’ve heard.
What can you tell us about your visual aesthetic and style?
My work could be about color and beauty, I’m attracted to visuals that I find striking and sexual. Concept usually comes after I start working on the visual part.
When did you recognize the “creative spirit“ in you and how did your passion for art start?
It came naturally over the years. I always felt different though, I only understood that I’m in my own pool after moving to New York and attending Parsons. Now I know what I am doing. I recently became interested in photography and I’m trying to make it my main focus for now.
Where do you get your inspiration from when you start thinking about a new artwork?
I usually get inspiration from people around me. I am very grateful for the friends I have that contribute to my work, I hope to see them all succeed in their own practices.
How would you describe the word beauty?
Beauty is what draws people together.
You came from Ukraine to New York to study Fine Arts at Parsons, which influence did this have in your own aesthetic and work?
Ukraine doesn’t have much of an art scene, so being here definitely pushes me to create things and gives me an opportunity to open up, explore new art forms. Also, I don’t think I would ever start doing photography if I didn’t end up in Parsons.
Which artist inspires or impresses you the most?
Hiroshi Sugimoto, George Condo & Yoko Ono.
Thank you very much for answering these questions, is there anything else you want us to know?
I dislike pop music 😀
