American designer, Jill Stuart, invokes an essence into her designs that is an ideal blending of girlish innocence and flirtatious fun posed with a punk edge that borders on a darkness à la Sophia Coppola and her classic Virgin Suicide characters. We began coveting Stuart’s dresses after seeing them on Cher (Alicia Silverstone), Dion (Stacey Dash), and Ty (Brittany Murphy) in Amy Heckerling’s Clueless (1995) and our passion has only since grown.

Her upcoming collection for Fall/Winter 2012-2013 (debuting in February of 2012 at Lincoln Center in New York) was ridden with her signature cocktail dresses, pumping up the volume this season with a retro vibe, in sharp contrast to her Spring 2012 collection, which featured 1920s inspired sheath frocks. It’s no surprise that the designer noted No Wave singer and poet Lydia Lunch as a muse for the collection, with a favored tendency toward texture, vampy vibes, and an underground edge.

The ad campaign, shot by photographer Mario Sorrenti, stars Beegee Margenyte who is displayed in an eerie 1960s household vibe, with abusive and seductive innuendos.

We love nothing more than art that exudes a lighthearted exterior masking a deep rooted inner darkness. Stuart has brilliantly done just that.
