18 year-old Låpsley (ake Holly Lapsley Fletcher) is a Southport, England-born multi-instrumentalist, singer, and electronic music artist known for clean, resonant compositions and a stirring voice. Fletcher began songwriting at age twelve after extensive classical training. But it took several years for the artist to translate her classical training into electronic music. “It just intrigued me at how different it was to the classical stuff that I did back home” she said in a recent interview with DIY Magazine.

Låpsley’s newest EP Understudy, out on XL Records, is a breathtaking four-track ensemble perfect for a tranquil day. The release has led to the artist’s inclusion in the BBC Sound of 2015 Longlist. Låpsley’s achingly beautiful vocals stand out throughout Understudy, and at times—aided by distortion—her sound is reminiscent of Imogen Heap. The EP’s four songs, respectively entitled: “Falling Short,” “Brownlow,” “8896,” and “Dancing” are rife with delicate electronic instrumentation, piano, synths, and the unexpected, yet addictive rise and fall of atmospheric noise. Låpsley’s lyrics are so naturally vulnerable, one could believe the content is taken straight from her diary.

Låpsley shot into 2015 with this dazzling EP, and we want to hear more from this youngster. “I think music is different to each individual and so whatever I release I’m going to be judged. I’m going to carry on how I am now,” she said in an recent interview with www.getintothis.com “I feel the moment you change for the sake of other people, especially critics, is the moment you lose what you had and what made people like you in the first place.”
